about

This release had it's origins in a disquiet project (disquiet.com/2015/06/11/disquiet0180-matryoshkamusic/); the objective was to compose a piece of music representing russian dolls. I (sevenism) loved jmmy's idea: he repeated a sample, speeding it up each time to represent smaller and smaller russian dolls. I thought it would sound interesting repeating the sample until it became infinitely small and collapsed into itself and jmmy thought layering it up could produce something rich.. a collaboration was born!

I'd been in the planning stages of setting up this label anyway, wanting to showcase the more conceptual/experimental side of modern ambient music so this seemed like the perfect project to start it off. jmmy and i went off and did our separate thing based on the concept and when we regrouped i loved how they fitted together.

sevenism: for my side i wanted to explore the phasing between layers and how they'd sound when they're fading out at different times. i was also interested in when it'd sound natural for different layers to fade in as there was a constantly shifting time signature. I sampled another track of mine with long ambient tones and used a mouse recorder to repeat and speed up the samples; i got about 60 iterations before it glitched out.. when it came to saving the project it nearly crashed my computer coz there were thousands of samples, nearly 2gb worth! it had been a weird summer with the weather all over the place and just when i thought it was gonna warm up it would go cold and rainy again.. i wanted to get that sense of promise and disappointment across..

jks: I was a little taken aback when sevenism reacted to my initial junto submission (soundcloud.com/jmmy-kpple/untitled-matryoshkoid-disquiet0180-matryoshkamusic) with such enthusiasm. I get hung-up on obvious ideas sometimes and my piece felt like one of those intriguing but slight preoccupations. It maybe had something about it that merited it being realised, but equally, perhaps it was also a touch trite? Certainly, my thought process was simple to the point of inanity; like, let's just check to see if this sounds how you'd expect it to, right?

sevenism elegantly expanded and elaborated on my idea (soundcloud.com/sevenism/matryoska-demo), and gently convinced me to try my hand at making something that, like his piece, extended from the that initial idea. Once convinced, I fumbled through a number of variations and whims - even the piece i finally sent him was typically ill-disciplined and inconsistent. What's finally made it to tape is firmly in the lineage of thought that goes back to my initial response to the Junto but is also maybe something that betrays it too; i've drifted, lurched; coloured outside the lines...

The basic sound source [eight seconds or so of escalator recorded in a Metro station] is bisected and decayed over forty or so sections but it's also fussily and messily smeared, folded; delayed and tweaked... I'm grateful to sevenism for making me think about this approach and perceiving something interesting in my initial piece; left to my own devices i'm sure i wouldn't have been as diligent in pursuing variations on that framework and certainly wouldn't have made the track you find here.
